css position - Making a Jeopardy game in HTML/CSS/Javascript

I'm trying to make a jeopardy game where the "cards" turn over to reveal the answer/prompt to which the player must provide the question. I'm having trouble getting the cards to flip. I'll write the JS later. I'm just testing the card flipping with css by making them flip when you hover over a tile.

I think it has to do with the fact that I set the position to absolute in an attempt to center text on the cards. The project is host on repl.it here: https://repl.it/join/ankxehfs-cauzality

Anyone know how to make this work? This is for a teacher friend so they can quiz their students in class. They have an old smartboard and are having trouble with a smartnotebook version of the game. I thought I could just bypass smartnotebook for them without much trouble, but I ran into trouble.
