gtk - Way to fill color into arbitrary GdkRectangle

Is there some way to fill an arbitrary GdkRectangle with a color?

Tried different methods and don't know how to approach that, looked at cairo which probably should do these things but that doesn't work.

I tried:

  GdkRectangle rect;
  rect.x = my_start_x;
  rect.y = my_start_y;
  rect.width = 100;
  rect.height = 100;

  // the cr already exists
  gdk_cairo_rectangle(cr, &rect);
  cairo_clip(cr);

  cairo_set_source_rgb(cr, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0);
  cairo_fill(cr);
