project - Eclipse CDT not setting Built-in Compiler Settings for GNU C

Question

I am using Eclipse Version: 2019-12 (4.14.0) under Ubuntu 18.04LTS (in a VirtualBox VM).

When I create a Makefile project with existing code, the include search paths for GNU C++ are populated with several directories, as shown in the image.

Why are directories not added for GNU C? Is there any way to get them automatically added?
