I have seen the following tag as an answer to a question:

<%: Model.FirstName %>

what does " <%: " do?

It html encodes the output of Firstname, this prevents encoding attacks like cross-side scripting (XSS).

Html encoded:

<%: Model.FirstName %>

Normal output:

<%= Model.FirstName %>
